Taking Care of Pets with Allergies

It might be hard to believe but your dog is susceptible to allergies like you are.  Just like us, pets with allergies have an immune system that mistakes an ordinary food item or part of nature for a threat.  Their immune system will attack the offending particle or food and you can have a very sick or uncomfortable dog on your hands.  To know if your dog has allergies there are some things to look for.

If your dog is obsessed with licking or scratching himself or is constantly shaking his head he could be suffering from an allergic reaction of some kind.  If you notice patches of red and irritated skin on your dog that are hot when you touch them he could have allergies.  If you see your dog rubbing his face repeatedly, look for sore spots around his muzzle and redness around his eyes.

Sneezing and coughing a lot along with discharge from your dog’s nose and or eyes is another sign he might have allergies.  Allergies might look like a bad case of dandruff.  Your dog might be having hard time breathing and is wheezing.

When you notice your dog isn’t eating anything and is vomiting or having diarrhea and is weak, these symptoms could be a sign of a food intolerance or allergy.  A pollen allergy may cause your dog to constantly chew and lick his feet.  If your dog is constantly rubbing his ears or scratching at them and you notice a waxy discharge coming from them that smells and may have some blood in it, these are a good indication of an allergy.

Of course there may be other causes for some of these symptoms but a trip to the veterinarian can determine if it is an allergy.  Once your dog is diagnosed with allergies a Chinese formula will help them get better.  A common formula will clear up nasal congestion, itchy eyes and nose, runny nose if it’s clear and seasonal or episodic sneezing.  There are a few ways to administer the herbs to your dog. One way is with a syringe.   You can mix the herbs into a liquid such as broth, clam juice, fruit juice or flavored syrups, fill the syringe and slowly and gently squeeze it into their mouth.  It is not fun to watch your pets with allergies but good to know there are remedies out there to help them get well.
