A general contractor is familiar with not only framing but he knows all about roofing , plumbing, electrical, drywall, concrete, insulation, flooring and more. because there is so much to explain.
On the other hand you have the basic contractor who does just one thing. Pretty much repetitive work. He knows his job, and can be some what familiar with other work. That what gets him in trouble.
Tile man lays some tile. a while later theres is a crack in the floor.
When ask about thr crack in the floor.".He replays don't ask me, I just laid the tile. Talk to the general contractor. So they all meet in the same place, with the owner. The general walk in the room. First thing he says is " where is your expansion joint". Then tells the tile setter to fix his work.
Maybe he will say, we can just cap off these electrical wire. And leave them in the wall. Or maybe hell say, this 12 gauge wire is okay. Or we can just put in a bigger fuse. Don't be fooled. These are all the wrong ways. So if you have heard this before, beware!
Some general contractor sub out all there work. They may have anything little basic tools. Which they would have to dust off.
They rely on someone else to keep up with new codes. Which I think is a mistake. A lot of contractor believe they don't have to look because they already know the code. Then they spend more time in court than on the job.
It takes a special kind of person to want to get himself involved in this kind of work. Because it takes a lot of tools. You have to have all the tools for all the trades. And a garage your not using. And maybe a couple of sheds.
Its not going to be a mindless drone that does the same thing day after day. Boy we got a lot done today.
